About Zumba

I like to describe Zumba as Aerobics to Latin Music. But it's so much more than that. Zumba was started accidentally in 2001 by Beto Perez. He was a fitness instructor who forgot his regular fitness music one day and improvised the class with his personal collection of Latin music. And the rest as they say, is history. You can read the story in detail at Zumba Dot Com About.

One of the misconceptions people have about taking Zumba is that you need to be able to dance. It's really not about learning the steps or routines perfectly. It's about moving, burning calories and having fun while you get in shape!

Zumba has taken off and a variety of types are offered. There is Zumba Basic, Zumba Gold, Zumba Toning, Aqua Zumba, Zumbatomic and Zumba in the Circuit. Detailed descriptions of these are listed at Zumba Dot Com About.

All you need to bring to class is water and a towel. Wear comfortable exercise clothing, preferably moisture wicking layers. You will get hot! Wear comfortable fitness shoes that allow you to pivot but have some support. Some people swear by Converse, others need much more support than those offer. Wear what is comfortable for you but, please, no black soled shoes on the sensitive dance floor.

About Rosy Straka - Riches to Rags to Riches

I love Zumba! Join me and you will learn to love it too, especially after you see how it benefits your mind and body. What is Zumba? It's a great cardio workout disguised as an hour long Latin dance party! If you are tired of the run of the mill cardio, this is just what you need to get out of that rut.

Why did I start Zumba? I had always been a small person who ate whatever I wanted and never had to exercise. Imagine my surprise when middle age set in and the pounds started packing on! Having to buy size 14 pants was the wake up call I needed to get myself back into some resemblance of my former self.

I joined Weight Watchers and started to eat more healthfully, paying attention to portion sizes as well as adding more fruits and vegetables. The weight starting coming off. It wasn't coming off as quickly as I had hoped and I resigned myself to the fact that I needed to add exercise.

Unfortunately, I hate to exercise.

My Honey Bunch saw an add for Zumba Fitness and told me he thought I would like it. I resisted because I thought it would be just another exercise class I would hate. Eventually, I gave in and signed up for a class in November of 2008. Why had I waited so long? I fell in love with Zumba from the moment I took it. The instructor, Amelia (Mia) Said, was the main reason I liked it so much and I owe my love of Zumba and the last 33 pounds I lost, to her. (Had to give Mia her props!) I love her style, which is true to the inventor of Zumba, Beto Perez' style. It's very Latin with dance styles that include merengue, salsa, cumbia and so on.

After following Mia (and some of her prodigies - Miguel, Alex, Sheyla, Leah) around for two years, I finally decided to become licensed. I am so excited to have the opportunity to teach what I love and to do my Zumba mentor, Mia, proud.

Now that I’m in my 50’s, I finally realized that being skinny doesn't mean you are healthy. I am amazed to say that I have never been in better shape in my life. My heart loves the cardio, my mind loves the release, my muscle tone is great and I feel wonderful!

I'm not sure why but whenever I get a review on Yelp, Yelp puts it in the filtered section and then no ratings show up. Most recently, it has left one review but the other 6 are in the filtered section. I have added a screen capture of them below.
